**TL;DR —** On **3 September 2026** Whitespark published a study of **1.4+ million** local listings across **17** industries. Listings whose Google Business Profile **name** contained an exact- or partial-match keyword sat in Google’s **top 3** local pack **about 2× to 5×** as often as listings with no keyword in the name, depending on industry. For **home services**, the rates were **4.57%** (exact), **4.71%** (partial), and **2.21%** (none). That is **correlation**. It is not permission to paste extra words onto the listing. Google’s name rule is the **real-world** name. Do not mix this with the 25 Aug category study, the 1 Sep Q2 Maps-actions post, or the 2 Sep Tell Maps US rollout.

## What Whitespark measured on 3 September 2026

Miriam Ellis wrote the study for Whitespark. The cut is **1.4+ million** listings and **17** industries. They scored the **business title field** on the Google Business Profile — the name you see on Maps — against three buckets:

| Bucket | Example they give (appliance repair) |
| --- | --- |
| Exact-match keyword | Affordable **Appliance Repair** |
| Partial-match keyword | Kelly’s **Appliance** Center |
| Zero keywords | DG tech |

They then measured how often each bucket appeared in the **top 3** of the local pack.

This is not a Google Search ranking incident. Google’s ranking status history still tops out at the **August 2026 spam update** (started 18 Aug, ended 21 Aug). Search Central documentation RSS still newest-items at **31 Aug 2026** (European Search Dataset Licensing). Name is a **Business Profile** field.

Do not treat this post as a patch for:

- **3 Jul 2026** public reviews vanishing
- **9 Jul 2026** dashboard “You have no reviews yet”
- **24 Aug 2026** reviews missing after reinstatement
- **25 Aug 2026** specific vs generic category (1.8 million profiles)
- **2 Sep 2026** Tell Maps US hours-from-a-sign suggestions
- **1 Sep 2026** Q2 Maps calls vs direction requests

Those are separate failure modes. This one is: the listing is live, and the **name** either matches the door or it has been stuffed.

## Home services: any keyword in the name, about 2× the top-3 rate

VTL’s field-ops readers are trades and service businesses. The home-services row is the one to keep:

| Industry | Exact-match | Partial-match | Zero-match |
| --- | ---: | ---: | ---: |
| Home services | **4.57%** | **4.71%** | **2.21%** |

Having **any** trade word in the name roughly **doubles** the top-3 rate versus none. Exact and partial are essentially tied in this vertical. You do not need the full phrase “appliance repair” to show the correlation — “appliance” was enough in their example.

How common is each pattern in home services (listing counts, not rates):

| Industry | Exact | Partial | Zero |
| --- | ---: | ---: | ---: |
| Home services | 20,977 | 132,392 | 263,056 |

Most home-services titles in the cut have **no** keyword. Partial-match outnumbers exact-match. Exact-match is the rarest. Ellis’s read: most titles are unoptimized, and that is where the ranking *correlation* shows up. It is still not a stuffing instruction.

## The rest of the table (so you do not copy home services onto every trade)

Rates are **% of listings in that name-bucket that hit top 3**, not “% of the pack.”

| Industry | Exact | Partial | Zero | What Ellis flags |
| --- | ---: | ---: | ---: | --- |
| Beauty and personal care | 15.59% | 3.69% | 2.50% | Exact ~6× zero; partial barely helps |
| Legal | 7.53% | 7.37% | 2.51% | Any keyword ~3× zero |
| Medical and health | 9.63% | 4.96% | 2.86% | Clean gradient |
| Retail | 15.11% | 6.59% | 3.05% | Exact ~5× zero |
| Sports and fitness | 9.62% | 6.39% | 1.95% | Any keyword multiplies several times |
| Travel & tourism | 29.54% | 8.68% | 6.05% | Largest lift in the dataset (~5×) |
| Real estate | 3.92% | 3.71% | 2.31% | **Weakest name effect** |
| Automotive | 3.30% | 3.95% | 1.95% | Partial beats exact |

If you sell houses, do not expect the home-services 2×. If you run a salon, exact-match is the row that moved; partial almost did not.

## Keyword at the start of the name

Whitespark also checked **position**. Titles that **start** with the keyword correlated with more top-3 rankings in **15 of 16** industries with enough data.

Their example: “Plumbing by Andy” vs “Andy’s Plumbing.” More businesses in the dataset use the natural “Andy’s Plumbing” pattern. The correlation favors the awkward order. That is a branding decision, not a Google setting. A DBA that reads like a spam string on the door will still look like spam to customers — and to Google’s name policy.

## Google’s name rule is the sign, not the query

The ranking correlation is why people stuff. Google’s written rule is why stuffing gets the listing removed.

Google’s Business Profile name guideline:

> Your name should reflect your business’s real-world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website, stationery, and as known to customers.

And:

> Including unnecessary information in your business name isn't permitted, and could result in the suspension of your Business Profile.

Their own example is **Shelly’s Coffee** — not “Shelly’s Coffee 24 Hour Downtown San Francisco.” Hours, category, and address belong in their own fields.

Ellis is explicit on the same point: you do **not** have to spam Google to sit in the correlated bucket. **Legal rebrand or a DBA**, then match the sign. A competitor (or a customer) can report a stuffed name. Google can strip the extra words. You lose the listing you were trying to juice.

The 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey (Whitespark; 47 practitioners scoring 187 factors) still ranks **keywords in the GBP business title** as the **third** local-pack factor, after **primary category** and **proximity**. Category work is already on this blog from the 25 Aug 1.8 million-profile cut. Do that first. Do not skip category and proximity and paste “Best Plumber Dallas” onto the name.

---

## AI search: they did not measure it

The study title mentions AI search. The body is honest: Ellis **does not** have AI ranking data that ties an optimized GBP title to AI prominence. What she will stand on: Google Business Profiles remain the richest local dataset on the web, and Gemini trains on them. “Keywords are dead” is an informational-SEO slogan. It is not a measured GBP-title finding in this paper.

Do not quote this post as “keywords in the name rank you in ChatGPT.” That number is not in the study.

## Operator checklist (20 minutes, one listing)

Do this on a live, unsuspended profile. If reviews vanished after reinstatement, stop and diagnose that gap first.

1. **Screenshot** the Maps name, the storefront / van sign, and the website header.
2. **Diff.** If the GBP name has city, “24/7,” extra services, or a slogan that is not on the sign or stationery, **remove the extras**. That is compliance, not a ranking loss you choose later.
3. **If you want a trade word in the name**, change the legal brand or file a DBA, reprint the sign, then edit the listing once. One name change. Wait.
4. **Do not** bulk-edit name + address + category + phone in the same hour.
5. **Do not** burst-request reviews to “make the new name mean something.” Review velocity is a drip after completed jobs — see [GMB automation for service businesses](/blog/google-my-business-automation-service-businesses) and [WhatsApp vs email review requests](/blog/whatsapp-vs-email-review-requests).
6. **Category is a different post.** If the primary is still generic Contractor, fix that using [specific vs generic](/blog/gbp-specific-category-completeness) before you touch the name.

This is not a custom software Build. If Map Pack leads, CRM capture, and review replies are still manual, start with a [Blueprint](https://vijayatechlabs.com/book-blueprint) — a 5–7 day diagnostic. The productized review loop is [Reputation Management from $180/mo](https://vijayatechlabs.com/reputation-management?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=cta&utm_campaign=blog-reputation&utm_content=gbp-keywords-in-business-name).

## Limitations

- Whitespark reports **correlation**, not a ranking guarantee. Owners with keyword names also tend to work the rest of local SEO.
- Top-3 **rates** look small in some rows (home services 4.57% vs 2.21%) because the denominator is every listing in the bucket, not every pack. The lift is still roughly 2× in that vertical.
- They did not publish per-market competition or review-count controls in the tables above.
- **No AI citation matrix** for the name field. Do not invent one.
- Real estate is a weak-effect industry in this cut. Do not copy travel’s 29.54% onto a realty listing.
- Name cleanup does not restore missing historical reviews after a suspension.
- Alternatives: leave a stuffed name and wait for a report; paste the city into the title (guideline miss); ignore category and proximity. The honest first move is match the sign, then category, then a review drip.

## FAQ

### Should I add “plumber” to my Google Business Profile name if the shop sign does not say it?

No. Google’s name guideline is the real-world name on the storefront, website, and stationery. Unnecessary words in the name can suspend the listing. If you want a keyword in the name, change the legal brand or file a DBA, then match the sign.

### Do keywords in the GBP name guarantee Map Pack rank?

No. In home services, exact-match names sat in the top 3 **4.57%** of the time, partial-match **4.71%**, zero-match **2.21%**. Real estate showed only a modest lift. Category and proximity still sit above name in Whitespark’s ranking-factors survey.

### Does this replace the 25 August category study?

No. That study was specific vs generic **primary category** on **1.8 million** profiles. This one is the **name field** on **1.4+ million** listings. Do not bulk-edit name and category in the same hour.
