**TL;DR —** On **25 August 2026** Search Engine Land published Whitespark’s study of **1.8 million** Google Business Profiles across **4,209** categories. A **specific** primary category sat in the top 10 **12.5%** of the time versus **9.2%** for a generic one. Listings that had website, description, hours, photos, and claimed status averaged rank **43** versus **62** when those five fields were empty. That is correlation, not a promise. Do not mix this with the 24 Aug reinstatement-reviews gap.

## What the 25 August 2026 study actually measured

Darren Shaw (founder of Whitespark; disclosed in the article) wrote the Search Engine Land piece. The dataset is **1.8 million** Google Business Profiles and **4,209** categories.

The claim is not “reviews don’t matter.” It is that **category choice and profile completeness** still move with local rank, before you get to review velocity.

This is not a Google Search ranking incident. Google’s ranking status history still tops out at the **August 2026 spam update** (started 18 Aug, lasted 2 days 16 hours). Search Central documentation updates still last-updated **2026-08-20 UTC** (Preferred Sources button). Category selection is a **Business Profile** job.

Do not treat this post as a patch for:

- **3 Jul 2026** public reviews vanishing
- **9 Jul 2026** dashboard “You have no reviews yet”
- **24 Aug 2026** reviews missing after a suspension is reinstated

Those are separate failure modes. This one is: the listing is live, and the category + completeness layer is sloppy.

## Specific primary category vs generic

Shaw’s headline comparison:

| Primary category type | Businesses | Avg rank (lower is better) | % in top 10 |
| --- | ---: | ---: | ---: |
| Generic (Restaurant, Store, Contractor, Attorney, …) | 55,091 | 50 | 9.2% |
| Specific (everything modified) | 1,664,733 | 45.8 | 12.5% |

**12.5% vs 9.2%** is the “~36% higher presence in the top 10” line in the article.

For trades, the contractor cut is the useful one:

| Primary category | Avg rank | % in top 10 |
| --- | ---: | ---: |
| Electrician | 48.6 | 11.2% |
| Roofing contractor | 53.1 | 12.6% |
| Plumber | 53.2 | 10.4% |
| HVAC contractor | 53.2 | 12.4% |
| Contractor (generic) | 57.7 | 8.0% |

If the work is plumbing, the primary category is **Plumber**, not Contractor. Same for electrician, roofing, HVAC.

Exact-match still wins the query. For “hair salons”:

| Primary category | Appearances | Avg rank | % in top 10 |
| --- | ---: | ---: | ---: |
| Hair salon | 7,952 | 49.9 | **11.3%** |
| Hairdresser | 200 | 56.9 | 6.0% |
| Beauty salon | 2,066 | 60.0 | 3.2% |
| Barber shop | 297 | 79.5 | 1.3% |
| Nail salon | 36 | 81.3 | 0.0% |

**Limitation inside the same article:** “specific” is not a magic word. In the restaurant cut, Tapas averaged rank **28.8** (32.1% top 10) while Pizza averaged **74.8** (1.6%) and Chinese **73.2** (0.6%) — both worse than generic Restaurant at **49.7**. Crowded specific labels can still sit at the bottom. Pick the specific category that matches the job **and** is not the most over-used label in your town.

---

## Additional categories: specific helps, “Service establishment” does not

After the primary, Shaw looks at additional categories. Well-chosen extras correlated with **6–17 rank positions** better than primary-only listings.

Examples from the study (avg rank of the pair vs no additional category):

| Primary | Best-ranking additional | Avg rank | Vs no additional |
| --- | --- | ---: | ---: |
| Veterinarian | Emergency veterinarian service | 33.9 | 51.2 |
| Electrician | EV charging station contractor | 38.2 | 47.5 |
| Gym | Athletic club | 34.7 | 43.3 |
| Plumber | Drainage service | 47.3 | 54.0 |
| Roofing | Gutter service | 47.1 | 52.1 |
| Dentist | Cosmetic dentist | 47.6 | 57.6 |

Shaw is explicit: **correlation is not causation**. Owners who add extra categories also tend to ask for reviews and work the rest of local SEO.

The other explicit finding: **Service establishment** as an additional category is useless, and the data “seems to suggest that it’s harmful.” Nobody searches “service establishment near me.” Skip it.

Add extras only for work you actually do. A plumber who never touches drains should not add Drainage service to game the table.

## Completeness index: five fields, not a full audit

Whitespark scored each listing 0–5, one point each for:

1. A website
2. A business description
3. Hours of operation
4. Photos
5. A claimed status

They did **not** pull attributes, services, or products. Treat this as a floor, not a full GBP audit.

| Completeness index | Avg rank | % in top 10 |
| ---: | ---: | ---: |
| 0 | 62 | 4% |
| 1 | 58 | 5% |
| 2 | 54 | 7% |
| 3 | 50 | 9% |
| 4 | 47 | 11% |
| 5 | 43 | 13% |

Empty (0) to full (5): about **19** rank positions and roughly **triple** the top-10 rate (4% → 13%).

Home services were the most complete industry in the cut: average **4.4** / 5, **55%** fully complete. That is your competitive set if you run trades or field service. A half-filled listing is not “fine because the work is good.”

Shaw’s takeaway after the table: fill every field, then **maintain** the profile — request reviews continuously, upload photos, publish Posts, and keep the website current. Completeness is the on-ramp. [Review velocity](/blog/google-business-profile-algorithm-review-velocity) is the ongoing signal.

## Operator checklist (45 minutes, one listing)

Do this on a live, unsuspended profile. If the listing was just reinstated and the **reviews are gone**, stop and diagnose that gap first — do not bulk-edit categories while you are proving a restoration case.

1. **Screenshot** primary category, additional categories, hours, website, photo count, review count, and rating.
2. **Primary.** If it is Contractor / Store / Restaurant / Attorney / a similarly generic bucket, change it to the specific trade you sell (Plumber, Electrician, HVAC contractor, Roofing contractor, …).
3. **Additional.** Add only services you deliver. Plumber + Drainage service is the study’s example, not a template for every trade. Remove **Service establishment** if it is sitting there.
4. **Five-field floor.** Website URL that loads, description that names the actual services and city, hours including the real closed days, recent photos (job site and storefront, not stock), claimed/verified.
5. **Do not burst-edit** name, address, phone, and category in the same hour. One change set, then wait.
6. **Do not burst-request reviews** to “make the completeness mean something.” A drip after completed jobs is the review play — see [GMB automation for service businesses](/blog/google-my-business-automation-service-businesses) and [WhatsApp vs email review requests](/blog/whatsapp-vs-email-review-requests).

This is not a custom software Build. If Map Pack leads, CRM capture, and review replies are all still manual, start with a [Blueprint](https://vijayatechlabs.com/book-blueprint) — a 5–7 day diagnostic. The productized review loop, if you want the engine rather than a project, is [Reputation Management from $180/mo](https://vijayatechlabs.com/reputation-management?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=cta&utm_campaign=blog-reputation&utm_content=gbp-specific-category-completeness).

## Limitations

- Whitespark (and Shaw) say **correlation ≠ causation** on both additional categories and completeness.
- The completeness index is **five fields**. Attributes, services, products, Q&A, and Posts were not in this index.
- The full category report is “publishing soon.” This article is the SEL summary, not the full dump.
- Specific + crowded can still lose (Pizza / Chinese vs generic Restaurant in the same piece).
- Category cleanup does not restore missing historical reviews after a suspension.
- Alternatives: leave a generic primary (you compete with every contractor in town); stuff extra categories you do not deliver (misleads the query match); buy a “GBP optimization” package that only writes a description. The honest first move is specific primary + real extras + the five fields, then a review drip.

## FAQ

### Should I pick Contractor or Plumber as my Google Business Profile primary category?

Pick the specific trade you actually sell. In this study, generic Contractor averaged rank **57.7** and **8.0%** in the top 10; Plumber averaged **53.2** / **10.4%**, Electrician **48.6** / **11.2%**.

### Does filling out every Google Business Profile field guarantee Map Pack rank?

No. Completeness correlated with better rank (0 → avg rank **62**, **4%** top 10; 5 → **43**, **13%**). Owners with complete listings also tend to collect reviews and maintain the site.

### Should I add Service establishment as an additional category?

No. The study flags it as a nothing-category that nobody searches, and the data suggests it is associated with worse rank than having no extra category.
