TL;DR — On 4 September 2026 Search Engine Roundtable reported Google Business Profile showing Submit a business photo as a fifth verification method, next to phone or text, email, live video call, and postcard. Google’s Verify your business help page still lists those four. It has not been updated for photo. The in-product requirements, also via Ben Fisher: the business name on a permanent fixture (signboard) and the entire storefront in a single frame. That is ownership proof. It is not Tell Maps, not a Map Pack ranking tactic, and not a license to print a keyword banner.
What Search Engine Roundtable reported on 4 September 2026
Barry Schwartz published New Google Business Profiles Submit A Business Photo For Verification on Search Engine Roundtable, 4 Sep 2026, 7:51 am. Google Business Profile appears to be adding a fifth way to verify: submit a photo of the business location.
Ben Fisher (Google Business Profile Diamond Product Expert) spotted it on LinkedIn: “We’re now seeing ‘Submit a business photo’ appear as a verification option.” He called it a pretty significant change.
Schwartz’s first read: Google has not updated the Verify your business page, so this might just be a test. That page, checked 5 Sep 2026, still offers:
| Method in official help (5 Sep 2026) | In the SER report |
|---|---|
| Phone or text | Existing |
| Existing | |
| Live video call | Existing |
| Mail (postcard) | Existing |
| Submit a business photo | Spotted in product. Not in the help article. |
This is not a Google Search ranking incident. Ranking status still tops out at the August 2026 spam update (started 18 Aug, ended 21 Aug). Search Central documentation RSS still newest-items at 31 Aug 2026 (European Search Dataset Licensing). Search Central Blog still tops at the 28 Aug 2026 site-reputation policy update.
Do not treat this post as a patch for:
- 3 Jul 2026 public reviews vanishing
- 9 Jul 2026 dashboard “You have no reviews yet”
- 24 Aug 2026 reviews missing after reinstatement
- 25 Aug 2026 specific vs generic category (1.8 million profiles)
- 31 Aug / 1 Sep 2026 Q2 Maps calls vs direction requests
- 2 Sep 2026 Tell Maps US hours-from-a-sign suggestions
- 3 Sep 2026 Whitespark name-keywords correlation (1.4+ million listings)
Those are separate failure modes. This one is: Google is asking you to prove the listing, and the new prompt (where it appears) wants a still photo of the real facade.
What the photo actually has to show
Schwartz first wrote that it was unclear whether the shot should be inside, outside, or both, and guessed it would resemble live video call verification.
Live video, from Google’s own help, asks you to show:
- Current location — outside signs, nearby businesses, or a street sign
- Business or equipment — products, branded equipment, marketing materials, or tools
- Proof you manage the business — employee-only areas, cash register, kitchen, storage, non-sensitive documents, or keys to the facility
Then Fisher posted the photo requirements. SER’s update: show the business name printed on permanent fixtures such as a signboard and show your entire storefront in a single frame.
That is tighter than “any photo of the shop.” Entire facade. Name on something that does not come off after the upload. One frame — not a collage, not a gallery dump.
Google’s video recording help already uses the same permanent-fixture language for storefront and hybrid businesses: name clearly printed on a signboard, wall, or window, and the name in the video must match the name on the Business Profile. If you do not have permanent on-site signage, that same page says to list the profile as a service-area business, not a storefront.
Photo verification, as spotted, is the storefront version of that rule without the 30-second live recording.
You do not pick the method
Google’s verification help is blunt: verification methods are automatically determined by Google and cannot be changed. Options depend on business type, public info, region, or business hours. Sometimes you need more than one method.
If video is offered, Google recommends video. Video verification is documented for storefront, service-area, and hybrid businesses. The photo option is not in that article.
After you submit, Google can take up to 5 business days to review. Instant verify still exists for Search Console website verify and bulk verify. Do not assume a photo upload is instant.
Postcard rules still apply if that is the method you get: do not edit name, address, or category while the code is in the mail; do not request a second code (it invalidates the first); codes expire in 30 days.
Not Tell Maps. Not a gallery photo. Not a name-keyword play.
Three mix-ups that will waste a day:
Tell Maps (2 Sep 2026). Contributors in the US can suggest hours, attributes, tips, or photos, including from a storefront-sign photo, through Ask Maps or Contribute. Google still reviews the suggestion. That is a public edit. It does not prove you own the listing. Help for that flow is US-only.
Profile gallery photos. Google’s photo guidelines for the listing (exterior, interior, at-work shots) apply after you are verified. A verification photo is a gate. Do not upload a hero image to the gallery and call the profile verified.
Keywords in the name. A 3 Sep Whitespark study correlated trade words in the GBP name with higher top-3 rates. That is the name field, not verification. If you reprint the sign as “Emergency 24/7 Plumber Dallas” so the photo “matches,” you can fail Google’s real-world name rule and suspend the listing you were trying to claim. Match the door. Then verify.
Operator checklist (25 minutes)
Do this on the profile Google is actually showing you. Do not hunt for a photo button that is not there.
- Open Get verified. Screenshot the methods listed. If Submit a business photo is absent, use what is present. You cannot force the fifth method.
- If photo is offered, stand outside. Whole storefront in one frame. Name readable on a permanent sign, wall, or window. No glare crop that drops the name.
- Diff the name. The words on the sign must be the words on the listing. If they already diverge, stop and fix the real-world name problem before you upload. Do not stuff extra words onto either side for the photo.
- No printout, no stock photo, no interior-only crop if the prompt wants the facade.
- Service-area / van-only. If there is no permanent on-site signage, do not invent a shopfront for the camera. Google’s video help already has an SAB path: neighborhood landmarks, tools, branded van, permit/invoice/utility bill that matches the listing name. Use the method Google offers for that profile type.
- Do not bulk-edit name + address + category + phone while review is pending.
- Do not burst-request reviews to “warm up” a listing that is still unverified. Review velocity is a drip after completed jobs — see GMB automation for service businesses.
- Category is a different post. Generic Contractor vs a specific primary is the 1.8 million-profile cut. Do not combine it with verification.
If reviews vanished after a suspension, stop and diagnose that gap first (GBP reviews missing after reinstatement). Verification photos will not restore historical reviews.
This is not a custom software Build. If Map Pack leads, CRM capture, and review replies are still manual, start with a Blueprint — a 5–7 day diagnostic. The productized review loop is Reputation Management from $180/mo.
Limitations
- The photo method is in-product, not in the help article. SER says it might be a test. Do not tell every client it has rolled out worldwide.
- No pass-rate, no region list, no SAB-vs-storefront split in the 4 Sep report. Do not invent them.
- You cannot choose photo over video or postcard. Google chooses.
- A photo of the facade does not rank you in the Map Pack. Q2 2026 US GBP actions (calls −11.9%, website clicks −12.5%, direction requests +21.1%) are a different post: Google Maps is the destination.
- Alternatives: wait for the method Google already offered (video is still the documented recommendation when eligible); list as SAB if you have no permanent sign; ignore a Get verified prompt (the listing stays unverified and you cannot edit as owner).
- Do not use this as an LSA, AdSense, or Gemini 3.8 Flash story.
FAQ
Is Submit a business photo in Google’s official verification help yet?
No. As of 5 Sep 2026, Verify your business on Google still lists phone or text, email, live video call, and postcard. Search Engine Roundtable (4 Sep) flagged that the help page has not been updated, so the photo option may be a test.
Can I print a banner, tape it to the van, and submit that photo?
The in-product requirements reported on 4 Sep ask for the business name printed on permanent fixtures such as a signboard, and the entire storefront in a single frame. A paper printout is not a permanent fixture. Google’s video-verification help uses the same permanent-fixture language for storefronts.
Is this the same as Tell Maps taking a photo of the hours on the door?
No. Tell Maps is a US contributor flow for suggesting hours, attributes, tips, or photos. Photo verification is Google asking the owner to prove the listing. Do not treat a contributor hours suggestion as ownership verification.
