TL;DR — Google shipped an embeddable Preferred Sources button on 20 Aug 2026. Clicking it adds the host as a preferred source and returns the reader to your page. A /blog, /glint, or /aeo-blog path cannot be its own source. If you sell AEO, this is the deliverable to ship on the client domain this week — not another dashboard, and not a Reddit thread.
What Google actually shipped
Search Central’s Preferred Sources doc was last updated 2026-08-20 UTC. The recommended implementation is two lines: load publisher.js, then render <div google-add-preferred-source-btn>. The official button is localized, themeable, and — unlike the older badge — sends the reader back to the page after they add you.
Google’s Keyword blog (Mrinalini Loew, 20 Aug 2026) says people have already selected more than 600,000 unique sources. Search Engine Journal notes that is up from more than 345,000 in May, and that the old badge dumped the reader into Google’s preferences tool.
Where it shows up, in Google’s words: selected-site content is more likely to appear in Top Stories, and in AI Mode and AI Overviews it can be highlighted with a “preferred” badge.
Search Central’s August 2026 updates list still tops out at that 20 Aug “New custom button for preferred sources.” There is no newer Search Central change in this scan.
Eligibility is the part agencies skip
| URL | Its own Preferred Source? | What the button adds |
|---|---|---|
https://vijayatechlabs.com/ | Yes — domain | vijayatechlabs.com |
https://blog.client.com/ | Yes — subdomain | blog.client.com |
https://vijayatechlabs.com/blog | No | still vijayatechlabs.com |
https://vijayatechlabs.com/glint | No | still vijayatechlabs.com |
https://vijayatechlabs.com/aeo-blog | No | still vijayatechlabs.com |
Google is explicit: only domain-level and subdomain-level sites are eligible. https://www.example.com/blog is the documented counter-example.
That is why a product page parked under the agency host cannot “win Preferred Sources for Glint.” The button on this blog adds vijayatechlabs.com. Clients who want their own preferred badge need the embed on their host.
What this is not
- Not a ranking switch for everyone. Only users who opt in see the preferred treatment.
- Not a reason to farm Reddit. Local Gemini is a different game: Search Engine Land (Danny Goodwin, 19 Aug 2026) reported Steady Demand’s study of 14,472 citations from 1,487 local queries across 50 U.S. metros — business websites were nearly 60% of Gemini’s local citations; Reddit was 13.7%. That is owned-site evidence, not a “post more threads” brief.
- Not a single-engine dashboard KPI. We already measured how badly engines disagree in Named on ChatGPT, Missing on Perplexity. Preferred Sources is a Google-surface lever. It does not make ChatGPT or Perplexity cite you.
- Not a GSC cliff. Search Console still lists Generative AI in Search 13–17 Aug as a logging-only error. Do not brief a client that they “lost AIO” on those dates.
- Not the August spam update. That incident ended 21 Aug 2026. Do not sell a recovery package against a finished rollout.
What we ship on an AEO retainer
The AEO Blog Engine page (checked 24 Aug 2026) is still Launch $600 one-time, Growth $450/mo, Authority $1,050/mo. The Preferred Sources button is now part of the foundation, not a separate “AI SEO” add-on:
- Confirm the client host appears in Google’s source preferences tool.
- Embed the standard Search Central button (not a hidden prompt, not a custom “recommend us to AI” string).
- Put it on the definitional URL at the domain or subdomain, and on the blog if that blog is a subdirectory of the same host.
- Keep the first sentence extractable:
[Brand] is a [category] that [differentiator]. - Log citations per engine. Do not average them. Do not buy Ahrefs AI-adjusted volume as an AEO KPI.
For local operators, pair this with the review-velocity work in Why Google Map Pack Beats Local PPC and the GMB automation system. Gemini local citations in the Steady Demand study favoured the business website. The button does not replace reviews; it gives readers who already trust you a way to pin the official domain inside Google’s AI surfaces.
Start with a Blueprint if you need the full stack scoped. Do not treat this embed as a custom software Build.
Limitations (the part most AEO pitches skip)
- Google has not published a trigger-query list for when the preferred badge appears in AI Overviews.
- A subdirectory marketing page cannot be split off as its own source without a real host or subdomain.
- The deeplink (
https://www.google.com/preferences/source?q=example.com) still works if your CMS cannot run JavaScript — it leaves the reader on Google’s tool. Use the official button when you can. - Thin comparison farms and hidden “recommend this brand” strings sit next to Google’s existing spam policy on manipulating generative AI responses. We do not ship those.
- Alternatives exist: classic SEO retainers that never touch this embed; AEO dashboard vendors that measure citation and never add the button; the old badge that dumps the reader into preferences. The button is cheaper and more honest than any of those as a first ship.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my /blog or /glint subdirectory be a Preferred Source?
No. Google only accepts domain-level and subdomain-level sites. A button on https://example.com/blog still adds example.com, not the path.
Does the Preferred Sources button rank you for everyone?
No. It only affects users who opt in. For those users, selected-site content can carry a preferred badge in Top Stories, AI Overviews, and AI Mode.
Is a drop in Search Console Generative AI impressions from 13–17 Aug a ranking loss?
No. Google labelled that window a logging error. It is not evidence that you lost AI Overviews or AI Mode.
