GBP Reviews Missing After Reinstatement: Diagnose Before You Edit

If Google reinstates a suspended Business Profile but the reviews are gone, the listing is not recovered. Google acknowledged the gap on 24 Aug 2026 with no published fix date — here is the operator checklist.

Google Business Profile listing marked live after reinstatement while the review count remains empty

TL;DR — A Google Business Profile that is live after a suspension is not recovered if the reviews are still missing. On 24 August 2026 Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google is aware of this reinstatement gap and is working on it, with no published fix date. Reply on the original support ticket, do not bulk-edit the listing, and do not blast past customers for replacement Google reviews.

What Google acknowledged on 24 August 2026

Search Engine Roundtable (Barry Schwartz, 24 Aug 2026, 7:31 a.m.) reported that Google is aware of and addressing reviews that stay missing after a suspended Google Business Profile is reinstated. Google is working on a fix. There is no estimated time for that fix.

Amy Toman, a Google Product Expert, put the symptom in one line: if a suspended profile was recently reinstated, the listing can be live while the reviews are gone.

Her action item is specific: if you still have the support ticket, reply on that email and say the reviews are missing. That keeps the gap attached to the original case instead of starting a new, disconnected thread.

Schwartz wrote that he does not think this is the same as the July “reviews vanish” incident — and he also wrote that he is not sure. Treat them as separate failure modes until Google says otherwise.

This is not a Search ranking incident. Google’s ranking status history still tops out at the August 2026 spam update (ended 21 Aug). Search Central’s documentation updates still top out at 20 Aug 2026 (Preferred Sources button). Missing reviews after reinstatement is a Business Profile problem, not a core-update story.

Three 2026 review-loss incidents — do not mix them

WhenWhat owners sawWhere it brokeWhat Google said
3 Jul 2026Public reviews disappeared; one owner reported ~4,651 reviews falling to 63 in about 24 hoursLive listingSpokesperson: systems that detect suspicious reviews may remove reviews and temporarily pause new ones; incorrectly removed reviews would be restored. Later update: Google said that issue was resolved
9 Jul 2026Owner dashboard: “You have no reviews yet.” One monitored listing still showed 916 reviews on the live pageDashboard only15 Jul spokesperson: reviews remained published on Search and Maps; dashboard display was the bug
24 Aug 2026Profile reinstated and live, historical reviews still missingLive listing after suspension recoveryGoogle is aware, fix in progress, no timeline. Reply on the original ticket

If customers can still see the stars on Maps, you have a dashboard bug. If Maps is empty after a reinstatement, you have the August gap. If reviews vanished after a fake-review attack or a mass-flag event, you are closer to the July 3 pattern.

Reinstated is not recovered

Search Engine Land (Rich Sanger, 24 Aug 2026) documented a service-area business that was suspended for showing a home address, then pushed through video verification that an automated system rejected, then restored.

The listing came back. Historical reviews and other profile content did not. New reviews started to appear. Historical performance data was gone.

That is the definition of incomplete recovery: the pin is on the map, the trust layer is not.

A profile is recovered only after you have checked:

  • Ownership and manager access
  • Name, address or service area, phone, website
  • Primary and secondary categories
  • Hours, services, photos, posts
  • Review count and average rating
  • Calls, website clicks, and direction requests versus the weeks before the suspension

Finding the listing in Maps confirms it is live. It does not confirm it is doing the job it did last month.

What to do this week (and what not to automate)

Preserve

Keep primary ownership on a business-controlled Google account. Agencies and staff should be managers, not owners. If the only login sits with a contractor, a reinstatement ticket can stall while reviews stay missing.

Write down, today if you have not already:

  • Last known review count and rating
  • Categories, hours, services, attributes
  • Support case numbers and the reinstatement email
  • Three months of bills, licences, DBA, lease or equivalent — the pack Google asks for on video verification

Screenshots will not put reviews back. They prove what existed.

Recover

  1. Confirm live vs dashboard (private window vs owner view).
  2. Do not change name, category, address, or phone while you wait.
  3. Reply on the original reinstatement ticket that reviews are missing.
  4. Correct only a genuine eligibility error (for example a service-area business that still displays a home address) before you appeal again.

Replace (keep jobs coming)

Do not pause the rest of marketing while Google’s queue moves. The website, WhatsApp number, and phone must work without Maps. Past customers in the CRM are faster than a new Maps pin. If you run review requests, send them to one or two secondary platforms you already use (Facebook, a trade directory) — not to every site at once.

Do not ask customers to recreate old Google reviews in a burst. That reads as a review-velocity spike, which is the opposite of the drip engine in The Google Business Profile algorithm and review velocity.

Reduce

Once the listing is whole, keep a second channel that can carry the week: branded search, email/WhatsApp to past jobs, referrals. Maps should not be the only way a plumber gets a call.

What review automation should and should not do here

The productized Google Review & GMB Automation system (live price $180/mo, checked 25 Aug 2026) is built for the steady loop: post-job review request, AI reply with a human gate on 1–3 stars, monthly trend report.

It is the wrong tool for a reinstatement hole.

WorkflowAutomate while reviews are missing?Why
4–5 star reply on reviews that still existYesNormal reply playbook
Post-job WhatsApp request to GooglePauseDo not burst-replace a missing history
Post-job request to a secondary platform you already useYes, limitedReputation continues off-Maps
Recreate old Google reviews from a spreadsheetNeverUnnatural; weakens the program
Bulk-edit NAP, category, or service area from a workflowNeverMakes diagnosis worse
Screenshot / export of count, rating, case IDYesContinuity record
Alert when public count ≠ last known countYesDetects this gap

The architecture for the healthy loop is still GMB automation for service businesses plus WhatsApp vs email review requests. Multi-location operators should keep per-location ownership maps as in multi-location Google review automation. None of those workflows can restore Google’s own review corpus.

This is not a custom software Build. If the rest of lead-to-revenue is also down, start with a Blueprint — a 5–7 day diagnostic, not an engineering project sold as “AI will bring the stars back.”

Limitations

  • Google has not published a fix date for the 24 Aug reinstatement gap.
  • We cannot see your private support ticket from this article; the reply-on-the-original-thread step only works if you have that email.
  • Screenshots do not restore reviews. They only document the before-state.
  • Secondary-platform reviews do not replace Map Pack prominence. They keep proof of work while Google’s queue moves.
  • A new-review drip after full recovery is still the ranking play; it is not a patch for a missing historical corpus.
  • Alternatives: wait silently (reviews may return, or they may not); pay a “review recovery” vendor to solicit replacements (risks the spam filter); rebuild the listing from scratch (usually worse). The honest first move is diagnose + ticket + off-Maps leads.

FAQ

My Google Business Profile is live again but the reviews are gone. Is that a dashboard bug?

Not if the public Search and Maps listing is also missing the reviews. Google acknowledged a reinstatement-specific gap on 24 August 2026. The 9 July dashboard bug left reviews visible to customers.

Should I text every past customer to replace the missing Google reviews?

No. Do not recreate old Google reviews in a burst and do not ask the same customers to repost the same text. Reply on the original support ticket and keep a record of the previous count and rating.

When is a reinstated profile actually recovered?

When ownership, categories, hours, photos, review count, rating, and lead volume are back — not merely when the listing appears in Maps.
